The Cuerda Seca technique originated in Persia and came to America via Spain. A wax outline is drawn on the tile and glaze is applied with a syringe. During the firing process, the glaze beads up against the wax barrier creating subtle flooded areas. Most of the time the outline is done with dark colored wax and serves as a dark outline in the design.

The American Encaustic Tiling Company was founded in 1875 in Zanesville, Ohio, and operated until 1935. It produced a large range of tiles in a variety of techniques. For more information, see American Art Pottery, by Dick Sigafoose.
