For Flygsfors
Console Bowl
11-11/16" diameter x 3-1/16" high

Dramatic and important, 'Primitive' console bowl by Scandinavian artist, Wiktor (Victor) Berndt.

Low, self footed bowl, of mold-blown, clear, 'wrinkled' glass, decorated with raised-and-etched, primitive pictographs of stick-figure Warriors or Hunters to the underside. Ground & polished top rim.

A tour de force by this major Flygsfors artist.

Center image of three raised-and-etched 'figures' the 'heads' of which are three stud feet.

Raised-and-etched symbol separating the sets of stick-figures seen below.

Detail of "primitive" stick-figure Warriors/Hunters appearing on underside of bowl.

In what has become a 'signature' style for Berndt, the decor is molded into the glass
-- in this case, as raised figures --
and, later, lightly ground to produce a raised- etched effect.

An outstanding example of Berndt's modernist interpretation of ancient pictographs.

Two small nicks to in side edge of rim, of which the larger is shown here.

Engraved signature: Berndt Flygsfors 5 (or 6) 61

Background: Flygsfors was formed in Sweden in 1888, producing all types of functional glass. However, they are best known for their groundbreaking design work in Modernist glass of the 1950's-60's. Key designers were Paul Kedelv (1949-1956) and Wiktor Berndt (1955-1974). Flygsfors was acquired by Orrefors in the 1970's and closed down in 1979.
