Background: Kahler Keramick was founded as a stove maker in 1839 by Joachim Christian Herman Kahler, producing stoves until 1888. Herman Augustus Kahler inherited the business in 1872, sometime after which (around 1900) the factory began producing luster glazes and heavily patterned ceramics for which the factory became known. He supervised production until his death in 1917.

Family run, Nils Kahler (b. 1906) and brother, Herman J, Kahler jointly assumed artistic direction.

Two important designers were also hired in the early 1900's Sven Hammershoi (early luster glazes), and Jens Thirslund (later, 1920's luster glazes).

The factory closed in the mid-1950's.
