Background:
Founded in 1886, Upsala-Ekeby
began to move into artisan-based design in 1897, and
took major steps in that direction from 1930 and the
Stockholm Exhibition, when it began to hire artists who were
to give UE its 1950's-70's design claim to fame. However, in
the 1960's it began what was to be an ill-conceived
aggressive expansion, acquiring or merging with such firms
as Rorstrand, Kosta Boda, etc. The decline started in 1973,
and by 1978 the company had collapsed under its own weight,
thus closing down its activities.
Nonetheless,
many of it's ceramic designs of the 1950's and '60's are
among the finest Scandinavian design.
Estonia
born Mari
Simmulson
started her ceramics career with Gustavsberg in 1945,
and designed for Upsala-Ekeby from 1949-1972, also producing
a number of public works and assuring herself a place in
major museums and collections throughout Europe.
