Original Etching
"Christiania Spigerverk"
by Christian Christensen
11-1/4" x 15-3/4"

A view of a sun-drenched factory, a manufacturer of nails. A large and excellent example of etchings capturing the early years of the Industrial Age. Image includes no fewer than six figures of workers.

Strong image in what appears to be its original faux burl frame, the frame bearing typical wear nicks. The etching in excellent condition.

BACKGROUND: Christiania Spigerverk, a manufacturer of nails, was founded in Norway in 1853. It continues in production today in a modern facility. This etching appears to be of an early stage of production, in the original factory, now abandoned, probably the first quarter of the 20th century. (At one time the abandoned factory served as a rehearsal hall for the Norwegian rock group "The Blind Bats.")
Actual photos of the factory, below, appear to be contemporary with this etching.
