BACKGROUND:
Vally
Wiselthier was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1895, where she
later studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule under Kolo
Moser (painting), Josef Hoffmann (architecture), and Michael
Powolny (ceramics). She was a member of the famed Wiener
Werkstätte from 1917-1922, after which she had her
own workshop in Vienna, KeramischeWerkstätte Vally
Wieselthier. She emigrated to New York in 1928, She
designed with Arthur Baggs at University of Ohio, and, via
the Metropolitan Museum traveling ceramics exhibit,
influenced the art of the Cowan Pottery, Cleveland.
Wieselthier designed for numerous firms, including the
Sebring Company (Ohio) General Ceramics (New Jersey),. She
died in New York in 1945.
