BACKGROUND:
Born
in Boston in 1868, George Canning Wales . studied
architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Early on he worked as an architect, and opened his own firm
in Boston, 1893-1924. He studied etching in 1917 under
William M. Paxton, and took up lithography in 1923. But,
from his youth, his passion had been the sea, and it was to
the sea and ships that he returned as a print maker. His
prints are in the permanent collections of many museums and
institutions including The Boston Public Library, Library of
Congress, New York Public Library, Peabody Museum, Old
Dartmouth Historical Society, The British Museum, Victoria
and Albert Museum, and the U. S. Naval Academy.
