Background:
Trained
as a sculptor, Willumsen designed stoneware for Royal
Copenhagen between 1925 and 1930, along with Axel Salto,
Jais Nielsen and Casrl Hallier; and again from 1940-1947. He
worked in his own studio in the 1930's and, again, after
leaving Royal Copenhagen. This piece dates from the earlier,
1930's, period.
"Small
factories and
workshops thrived in Denmark over the course of the
twentieth century, some founded by well know ceramicists who
also worked at the large factories...While not as well
known, nowhere else is the wide range of artistry and
technical expertise better illustrated..."
