Original Etching
"Salt-works Near Padanaram Bridge"
by
Leroy Milton Yale - (1841-1906)
Image: 4-7/16" x 6-1/8"
Sheet: 8-1/2 x 12"

Original etching depicting a salt-works in Dartmouth, MA.

Titled and dated in the plate, lower left:
Padanaram
Sept. 2 1887

Signed in the plate, lower right:
Leroy Million Yale

A narrow strip of paper, bearing the typeset copy, is glued to the sheet, well below the image. It reads: SALT-WORKS NEAR PADANARAM BRIDGE. DR. LEROY MILTON YALE.

BACKGROUND: Dr. Leroy Million Yale, Jr., was a pediatrician by profession, but also a dedicated author - he wrote articles for Scribners, angler - he made his own rods; tied his own flies, photographer, artist and etcher - he founded the New York Etching Society. Although a New Yorker, he summered in Quissett, MA, near Woods Hole, and across Buzzards Bay from Dartmouth, the area depicted in this etching.

-

Good, strong impression. Now double matted in what appears to be archival mat board. In a previous time it was apparently mounted non-archivally, leaving a typical stained mat-window border (now covered by the current mat). Possibly originally backed with wood, the back is heavily discolored; the front, much less so. Should clean well.
